BZI Steel outgrew its existing facility and needed to modernize operations: upgrade its beam‑processing machine, optimize workflow, and increase production capacity. Western Steel stepped in with a custom clear‑span solution designed to accommodate massive equipment and simplify workflow. A key feature: a 72’ × 20’6” trimmed structural opening in the front side wall, allowing efficient loading of fabricated beams. Since moving in, BZI Steel has been able to automate and monitor beam processing in real time — delivering on increased production and a robust return on investment.

Key Challenges

  • Creating a structural opening large enough (72 ft wide × 20 ft 6 in high) in a sidewall to allow large beam loading, while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Designing a clear‑span interior to house the beam processing machinery without internal columns obstructing workflow.
  • Ensuring the building’s envelope and structural framing support new levels of automation, such as real‑time monitoring, plus handling the operational demands of heavy, moving loads.
