Contact Climbing envisioned a multi-use facility—a climbing gym, fitness studio, and yoga venue—all under one expansive roof. The team required structural systems that enable high clear-heights, complex wall attachments, and flexible interior layouts. Western Steel Buildings delivered a custom fixed-steel solution with open-web trusses, mezzanine space, and multiple roof lines designed for both functionality and visual impact. The 15,000 sq ft roped climbing area features walls up to 52′ high and a bouldering zone with 14′-17′ high walls. Precise structural modelling was used to integrate climbing walls with point loads placed on the framing system for safe and reliable performance.

  • Supporting very tall climbing walls (up to 52′) with integrated structural anchoring.
  • Managing multiple roof heights/angles while maintaining structural integrity and architectural appeal.
  • Designing a mezzanine floor system while preserving high-ceiling wall zones for climbing.
  • Collaborating closely with specialty wall designers to incorporate climbing loads into the building structure.

Solution / Approach

  • Implemented open-web trusses and strategically placed support columns for high-load climbing wall zones.
  • Worked directly with the climbing wall designer (Vertical Solutions) on modelling and anchoring of the walls onto the steel structure.
  • Added a mezzanine N-Deck floor system to increase usable square footage without impacting the climbing volumes.
  • Integrated multiple roof lines to meet functional, aesthetic, and height-clearance requirements.
